Canada Express Entry 2023

Of all the ways to become a permanent resident of Canada in 2022, Express Entry is the fastest and most popular. So, if you’re thinking of moving to Canada, you should definitely consider trying out Express Entry. And if you’re concerned that you don’t know much about it, you’ve come to the right place. In today’s post, we’re going to do a deep dive into all things Express Entry.

What is like in Express Entry 2023

Express Entry is an immigration application program run by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It manages and processes applications that are submitted by skilled workers. It compares applicants to each other and invites the best to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Some of the things it uses to rank applicants include age, language proficiency, education level, and work experience. As a result, each applicant gets a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. The higher your score the higher your chances of getting a permanent residence invitation.

Who is eligible for Express Entry in 2023

Eligible candidates for Express Entry need to have a minimum of:

  • A university or college degree – this will be assessed against Canadian standards using an Educational Credential Assessment
  • Proficiency in English and/or French – you will need to prove this by taking an approved language test and scoring at least Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in either English or French
  • Skilled work experience – at least one year of continuous full-time experience in the past 10 years or equivalent part-time experience

Other eligible candidates are those who qualify for the following programs:

  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Federal Skilled Worker

However, keep in mind that these are just the minimum requirements for the Express Entry program. Even if you have all of them, you may still not be invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence. To get such an invitation you need to have a strong profile and a higher Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score than other applicants in the pool.

What requirements are expected of top candidates in 2023

Since Express Entry receives a lot of applications and is highly competitive, a lot is usually expected from its top candidates.

The ideal Express Entry candidates are:

  • Under 30 years old
  • Have a Masters degree or two Bachelor’s degrees
  • Have at least 3 years of skilled experience
  • Demonstrate moderate to high proficiency in English and/or French – have a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 8 or higher

Other things that can further boost your CRS score included:

  • High proficiency in both French and English
  • A PhD
  • Experience studying or working in Canada
  • An employment offer from a Canadian company
  • Getting nominated by a provincial nominee program
  • A Canadian sibling who currently resides in Canada

How to apply for Express Entry in 2023

To apply for Express Entry in 2023, you need to:

  • Create an Express Entry profile

Anyone interested in the Express Entry program needs to create a profile to join the pool of applicants. This profile acts as an Expression of Interest (EOI) and allows eligible candidates to be immediately ranked and given a CRS score. These scores are usually out of 1,200 points and can be increased over time.

Ultimately, they are designed to predict an applicant’s likelihood to be economically stable in Canada. So whenever Express Entry draws are conducted, these scores can be used to determine a cut-off point.

  • Register in the Canada Job Bank

While this is an optional step, it is a good idea to create a profile at the Canada Job Bank if you’re unemployed and have just created an Express Entry profile. This free public service can help you get noticed and selected by Canadian employers looking for skilled workers.

  • Get an Invitation to Apply or improve your CRS score

Every two weeks or so, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) holds Express Entry draws and invites top candidates to apply for permanent residence in Canada. As for the candidates who aren’t selected, they will have to update their information to stand a better chance next time.

Some of the things you can include when updating your profile include a provisional nomination, qualifying job offer, or additional work experience. There’s one thing you should keep in mind though – if you’re not invited to apply for permanent residence within a year, your profile will expire and you may have to submit a new one.

  • Apply for permanent residence

If you’re among the lucky ones who are invited to apply for permanent residence, you will have 60 days to do so. This application is usually done electronically and will require you to submit a lot of personal information and documentation.

Once you’re done with your application, you’ll have to wait for a final decision – 80% of these applications are usually processed and finalized within 6 months.

How much money will it cost you to apply for Express Entry in 2023

While submitting an Express Entry profile in 2022 is free, you will have to pay for tests, biometrics, and other costs as demonstrated below:

  • Medical examination fees – these cost around $250 for children and $450 for adults
  • Educational Credential Assessment – this costs an average of $200
  • Biometrics – these usually cost $85 per person
  • Police clearance certificates – these cost around $100 per country
  • Language costs – these on average cost $300
  • Government fees – these are usually only necessary when you’re invited to apply for permanent residence. While they usually amount to $1,325 for an adult, they are a meager $250 for a child

Also, if you don’t have a job offer and aren’t applying under the Canadian Experience Class program, you will need to have settlement funds. These are funds that prove you can support your immigration to Canada. You won’t have to pay them to the government, but you’ll have to prove you can access them for your permanent residence visa to be approved.

Depending on whether you are moving to Canada alone or with family members, you’ll need to have settlement funds of around $13,213 to $34,967. The more family members you’re moving with, the more money you’ll need.

Can you make two Express Entry applications at a go?

No, you can’t have more than one Express Entry profile/application at a go. If you’re married though, you can make an application under your spouse’s name or vice versa. In some cases, you can even submit two profiles for the same family.

Things to keep in mind when applying for Express Entry 2023

Before you run off and start applying for Express Entry, here are a few things you should keep in mind – they will save you a lot of grief down the line:

  • All the information from your Entry Express profile will be automatically transferred to your permanent residence application. So ensure everything you input is accurate because you won’t be able to change it and will actually have to attach verifying documentation
  • Not every Canadian job offer is valid for Express Entry. For one, it has to be full-time for at least one year. Secondly, it has to be at skill levels A, B, or 0 according to the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system. Finally, it needs a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
