5 Ways to Get Canadian Permanent Residency in 2023

Due to labor shortages, Canada has been trying to attract more immigrants in recent years. In fact, Canada had set a target of attracting 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021 – a goal that was undoubtedly bold. Not only did the country achieve this goal though, but it also set a more audacious one for 2022 – 411,000 new permanent residents.

So if there ever was a time to move to Canada, this is it. The government is eager to recruit you and the opportunities are endless. This is particularly true for occupations like hospitality that have experienced a great exodus of workers who have either switched to other jobs or upskilled.

Most Popular Ways to Permanent Residency in Canada

If you’re thinking of moving to Canada, we have some good news for you – there are several ways you can become a permanent resident. Five of them are:

  • Express Entry

The Express Entry system is one of the best ways to immigrate to Canada. This system usually accepts applications online and uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank candidates applying for three programs:

To apply, all you have to do is submit an online profile to the Express Entry pool – this is also known as an Expression of Interest. If you rank highly compared to other candidates, you will receive an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence. If you receive this, you will have 90 days to submit your application and pay processing fees.

  • Provincial Nominee Programs

Currently, almost all of Canada’s provinces and territories run nominee programs that allow people to move there. For instance, provinces like British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario have programs that often fast-track the immigration process. However, to be eligible for most of these programs, you’ll need to have a job offer from a Canadian employer.

This is because these programs are usually designed to attract immigrants who will boost the province’s local economy. As such, it’s always a good idea to apply for provinces where your skills are in high demand. While some of these programs usually nominate candidates through the Express Entry pool, others require you to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to them.

  • Study permit

International students can also become permanent residents of Canada. To do this though, they first have to come under a study permit. Later on, they can apply for a Post-Graduation work permit before eventually applying for permanent residence through the Express Entry system.

Since this process is quite straightforward, it’s not surprising that Canada gets more than 350,000 international students each year. To be eligible to be one of them though, there are some requirements you have to fulfill. These include:

  • Being accepted by a Canadian educational institution
  • Having no criminal record
  • Being healthy and willing to get a medical examination
  • Having enough funds to pay for tuition, return transportation, and living expenses
  • Being willing to leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay

After getting a study permit, you can work in Canada in the following places:

  • On-campus – no work permit is required
  • Off-campus – a work permit is required
  • At internships that count as part of the academic curriculum – a work permit is required

  • Start-Up Visa Program as one of the ways to Canadian Permanent Residency

This program recruits entrepreneurs from outside Canada and connects them with Canadian business incubators, angel investor groups, and venture capital funds. This is all done to facilitate the establishment and growth of start-up businesses in the country. To be eligible for this program though, an entrepreneur must have:

  • Confirmation that at least one designated venture capital fund is investing a total of $200,000 or more in the business
  • Confirmation that a designated angel investor group is investing at least $75,000 in the business

  • Post-Graduation Study Work Permit

If you’re an international graduate working in Canada under a Post-Graduation work permit, your work experience can help you apply for permanent residence under the Express Entry system. Other factors that can earn you points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) include:

  • Your skills
  • Your language proficiency
  • A Canadian job offer that is supported by a positive Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
  • A provincial nomination for permanent residence
  • The education and language proficiency of your spouse/common-law partner
